Find out your hair porosity with our High-Tech Hair Porosity Analysis so you can start getting your hair health back to where it should be and get the look you deserve.
How HairKnowHow determines your hair porosity
HairKnowHow uses high-power microscopes to image the cortex of your hair fibres directly. Our hair experts make hair porosity judgements following the assessment of multiple hair fibres to ensure that you get the most accurate and robust porosity measurement possible. Your porosity will be assessed as either low, medium, or high. In addition, hair expert Dr J Palmer will comment on the overall condition of your cortex across all the hair fibres tested.
Use your hair porosity metric to:
Periodically monitor changes in your hair porosity as you adjust your hair treatment or grooming regimes, making sure your hair stays measurably healthy and beautiful.
If you have medium to high porosity hair
Take decisive action to limit further damage to your hair
This may mean limiting or reducing damaging treatments
Start treating your hair with appropriate oils during conditioning to help reduce further damage
Change your shampoo to a milder formulation if needed
Treat your hair with more care– it may be more delicate, so careful brushing may be needed to avoid additional breakage
Start or increase the number of regular deep conditioning treatments
Monitor changes in your hair porosity as the health of your hair improves
If you have low porosity hair
Be safe in the knowledge that you have healthy hair and that you have been looking after it well
Continue looking after your hair as you have done but be aware of what treatments to avoid and the best grooming practices

Why do you need to know your hair's porosity?
The porosity of your hair is a vital core metric and is very important in understanding your existing hair health. Porosity measures the relative number of holes and cracks within your hair fibres cortex.
If you have high porosity hair, this means that you have a large number of holes and cracks running through the cortex of your hair. A low hair porosity measurement means that your hair possesses very few or no cracks and holes within your hair fibres cortex.
Knowing your hair porosity is important because high porosity hair will be characteristically weaker and more prone to breakage. But also with a higher occurrence of mid-fibre hair-splitting and split ends. Possessing hair with high porosity is an important factor in reducing or losing your natural hair curl and volume. The cortex, found within each one of your hair fibres, is responsible for most of the structural performance of your hair. So, if the cortex within your hair fibres is damaged with cracks and holes, your hair will be structurally weaker and unable to maintain its natural curl or wave.
High hair porosity is known to possess less lustre making hair look dull and unhealthy.
Knowledge of your hair health is the key to looking after your hair. We at HairKnowHow believe that only when you genuinely know your hair can you make positive, measurable changes to your hair regime, improving your hair health and beauty.
